NEW VINTAGE
2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, our best vintage ever!

The 2004 and 2005 wines are now going to be available to ship. There are less than two hundred cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah for each vintage.  We thought we would have more of each of these vintages but when we bottled we ran out of wine before we hit our anticipated numbers so we are going to release and pour both the 2004 and 2005 vintages here at the winery and move into the 2005 for sale in stores and restaurants. The 2004 is a great Cabernet, nice and soft and easy to drink. The 2005 is huge and chewy and a great CA red. Both are great Cabs. There just isn’t enough 2004 to make a release into the market on its own so we are offering them exclusively to our mailing list and I am afraid we will not have enough of either of these vintages to get us through until the release of the 2006 vintage in the Fall of 2010. All of the tasting notes and wine information will be available on our website for all four wines and the pre. Prices will be the same; $45 for the Cabernet Sauvignon and $35 for the Petite Sirah. These two vintages are both great but not destined to be around for long. I know you aren’t supposed to pick a favorite, these wines are like our children and we love them all, but I have to admit I have been in love with the 2005 Cabernet from the first day we tasted it. Jack on the other hand will usually choose a Petite.

Tasting Notes

2005 St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon - Blackberry and black raspberry fruits are on the forefront of this wine.  It’s subtle and elegant fruit tones are enhanced by tea leaf and rich forest floor elements.  There is a lovely minerality to this wine, reminiscent of wet stones and freshly rained on gravel.  The mouth matches the nose well with ripe fruit characters and cigar smoke.  The tannins are supple and lengthy and the acid meshes well and carries the mouth feel through to a long lasting finish.

2005 St. Helena Petite Sirah - This wine, as with every vintage of Petite Sirah that I have worked with, has amazing color.  It is dark purple with glints of blue and black.  Blueberry is the dominant fruit aroma, layered with all manner of bramble berries.  There is a lush creaminess of the nose, bringing blueberry pancake batter and blackberry crème brule to mind.  Combined with the lush fruit notes is a sexy mesquite wood character that makes the fruit even more exotic.  The mouth matches the nose well with the same concentrated fruit.  The tannins are big, but have a satin, mouth filling texture.  The acid balance is lovely, carrying the wine to a long and lasting finish.  The fruit keeps on going and going, taking over in the end.

Our History
The original scissor press and redwood tanks are still located on the top floor of the winery, built in 1885, utilizing gravity and hand pumps to move the grapes and wine. Joseph Varozza sold wines locally and in San Francisco under the JA Varozza label.
